ive been reading up more about the 4WS on celicas and read that the turning cicle of a 4ws celica is 4.7m. that equals 15.4 ft.

what are these like to drive then, is the system there just to make it park easier?

I know that with non 4ws celicas, doing a u turn is like doing a u turn with a bus:lol:

Can't imagine turning from the rear wheels, must feel wierd with the back end going out Laughing

Have driven a ST182 and ST183, both GTR's with 3SGE's.

Massive difference, sooo much easier to park, you can do a u-turn on a super tight street and out turn cars smaller than you Very Happy

It's not just for parking, it helps handling aswell. It cures a bit of understeer, more responsive steering and really stable lane changes at high speed. It is Dual Mode 4WS so at high speed, you can put it in sports mode and make the rear wheels turn the opposite way, making it corner real nice and grip so well!!!!

Is just as much fun as a RWD, at high speeds in sports mode, the back end can get very light and slidey.

At low speeds, if you floor it from a stand still and turn at the same time, the back end flicks out and when the wheels crap, it feels like its going to flip Shocked Laughing

At first, it did feel a bit weird to drive, took a bit too get used to.

To be honest, it's superb for parallel parking, so good i impressed my driving instructor! Only problem with it is driving out the parallel parking space. If your turning right waiting to pull out, the rear wheels turn the opposite way. So when you pull out, the rear wheels bump up the curb making you damage your wheels Evil or Very Mad

I tell you what though, it is fun embarassing all cars that are smaller than me by out turning them.

You can go so fast round a roundabout too, sometimes feels like im drifting Laughing Laughing

I think in the end it wasn't worth it, it simply added weight and wasn't that reliable.

Aparently, the early preludes (square shape) with 4WS had no problems was because it was all mechanical, nothing electrical. This made it far too heavy though Mad

Look at the weight difference,

ST182 - 1270kg

ST183 - 1310kg

4WS must weigh around 40kg Shocked

Thats not too bad compared to the old 4ws ludes, they were not as heavy as this but they didnt have the power to match the weight of the 4ws Laughing

Actually, i was just thinking, the 4WS cancels out understeer a little bit but weighs 40kg more than the ST182, wouldn't the 182 be a tiny bit faster? Would have thought it would handle better too Neutral

I don't know, just asking

I suppose it's like the MK2 Escort VS the Ford Mustang. The Escort would take the stang on a corner but the Mustang would take the Esky on the straight.

4WS did handle better though, more responsive, lots of grip, etc.
