| A great mod for the 3SGE is to upgrade the cams. For the rev 2 3SGE's, it is recommended that you convert to the 'shim under bucket' setup so you dont break your engine. Here is a little write up http://www.rossmachineracing.com/3sbucket.html - Quote :
- Toyota Celica DOHC (3-SGE & 5-SGE)
TOCD-6500: These cams are for hot street use, and will provide strong acceleration. The best power range is 3000-6500, and they will rev to 7500 in a well prepared engine. INTAKE: 28/62 EXHAUST: 68/22 DURATION: 270 LIFT: .403"
Necessary mods: PAECO inner & outer springs & aluminum retainers. A 1.0 to 1.5:1 boost in compression will give even more power but is not mandatory.
TOCD-7200: These cams are for very hot street and strip use. The best power range is 3500-7200 and it will rev to over 8000. INTAKE: 30/70 EXHAUST: 70/30 DURATION: 280 LIFT: .427"
Necessary mods: PAECO inner & outer springs, titanium retainers, 11:1 compression and a modified cylinder head. An aluminum flywheel will add even more acceleration and a Kevlar clutch is recommended for reliability.
TOCD-8000: These are all-out racing cams with tremendous power in the 4500-8000 RPM range. They will rev to 9000 in a well-prepared engine. INTAKE: 34/78 EXHAUST: 78/34 DURATION: 302 LIFT: .452"
Necessary mods: PAECO inner & outer springs, titanium retainers, 13-14:1 compression, fully modified cylinder head, chrome-moly or titanium con rods, aluminum flywheel, Kevlar clutch.
PRICES FOR TOYOTA CELICA DOHC CAMS & VALVE TRAIN COMPONENTS:
All cam grinds: $210 per cam, exchange ----- (add $180/cam if no exchange) SPECIFY MECHANICAL OR HYDRAULIC LIFTERS
Inner valve springs: $4.00 each Outer valve springs: $8.00 each Aluminum retainers: $12.00 each Titanium retainers: $25.00 each
Valve adjusting shims: $14.00 each (Any thickness) NOTE: For mechanical lifters, shims will be necessary to set the valve lash. You must install your cams first to determine the thickness of the shims that you will need, then call us. We can furnish shims in any desired thickness. | Stock cams:
Revision 1/2 3SGE: In: 244deg, 8.5mm lift (timing 7/57) Ex: 244deg, 8.5mm lift (timing 57/7)
Revision 3+ 3SGE: In: 252deg, 9.8mm lift (timing 7/65) Ex: 240deg, 8.2mm lift (timing 53/7)
As you can see, for rev3+ cars – Toyota switched to a staggered set up. If you have a revision 1 or 2 car then you would actually benefit from installing rev3 stock items! A cheap upgrade route to go if money is at a premium!
If you want to go for a big name company then plenty of companies cater for this as the 3SGE cams can be used in a 3SGTE and vice versa. The stock 3SGE cams are also more aggressively profiled than the 3SGTE items – this is why some owners in the US have swapped out their stock cams for stock 3SGE cams.
An example of aftermarket cams are:
Piper Cams (fast road): In: 260deg, 9.37mm lift Ex: 260deg, 9.32mm lift
With this setup you should expect circa 10bhp and they cost £450. If you have a revision 1or 2 car then you will need to have a shim under bucked conversion carried out if you intend to fit high lift cams as these engines have a habit of spitting out shims at high revs. The revision 3+ cars came with shim under bucket as standard.

| Sorry to sound stupid, but am getting a little confused by rev 1, 2 and 3, guess rev 2 is the st182? and the rev 3 is the st202? so if I was to put St202 Cams in my st182, is it just a straight swap? | |

| Yep,
rev 1 3sge - ST162 rev 2 3sge - ST182/3 rev 3 3sge - ST202/6
Rev 3 3sge cams will be an upgrade for your rev 2 3sge. They should be a straight fit so you wont have to worry about doing the shim under bucket conversion or messing with the ECU.
Would be interesting to see the results!
